Gian, how did you like your mechanics internship with us?

Back to overview page

Gian Frauenknecht completed a 6-month internship at HSE in 2024.

In his interview, he explains the tasks he took on and what surprised him during his internship.

Gian, what did you do during your mechanics internship at HSE?

Gian: I worked on a variety of projects and I also had my own sub-projects. My tasks included designing mechatronic components, producing them using suitable manufacturing processes, and their subsequent assembly and commissioning. I was also responsible for planning and carrying out functional tests.

What’s your background?

Gian: After my first apprenticeship as a commercial clerk, I discovered my passion for technology while working on mopeds. This is what led me to study mechanical engineering. I successfully completed my bachelor's degree at ETH Zurich (Federal Institute of Technology Zurich) at the beginning of 2024. I then used the time between my bachelor's and master's degrees to gain practical experience through this internship.

Tell us a bit about yourself. What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Gian: I have some unusual hobbies. My father taught me how to fish and forage for mushrooms, and I still enjoy these activities regularly. I often go fishing on Lake Greifen close to my shared flat or at home on Lake Constance. I like to pick mushrooms in the Appenzell region or in the Grisons mountains. In winter, if time permits, I spend almost a whole month on skis.

What was your motivation to do an internship at HSE?

Gian: I wanted to further develop my practical skills in mechanics and put the theoretical knowledge from my studies into practice. I particularly loved working on innovative projects and having the opportunity to actively contribute to the development of new technologies. The internship was an ideal preparation for my master's degree.

Was the role as you imagined it to be?

Gian: The internship fulfilled, if not exceeded, my expectations: I was surprised how much responsibility you were allowed to take on as an intern. I really appreciated the variety of tasks and the trust that was placed in me. Working alongside experienced engineers allowed me to benefit enormously from their knowledge.

What did you like about HSE?

Gian: The pleasant working atmosphere at HSE inspired me, as it provided a basis for effective cooperation. The company has specialists in all development areas, from mechanics, electrical engineering, software, and system engineering through to project management. This expertise and close teamwork allowed the team to successfully manage complex projects.

What trends should HSE keep an eye on?

Gian: Lab automation should be focusing on eco-friendly product development and on designing manufacturing processes efficiently to reduce waste. Sustainability and resource conservation are also becoming more important. It seems therefore crucial that new technologies and processes align with these principles.

Gian, we wish you all the best for your master's studies!
