Mark is the U.S. Business Development Advisor at HSE. He brings more than 20 years of experience in analytical chemistry, product innovation, and strategic leadership to HSE. He explains in his interview how his experience will help him to expand HSE’s partnerships and presence across North America
What’s your professional background?
Mark: I’m an analytical chemist by training, with a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry. Early in my career, I worked for several pharmaceutical and biotech companies before joining Micromass, one of the original commercial mass spectrometry companies. I began as a Service Engineer but soon moved into an applications role, helping customers use their instruments and learning firsthand how mass spectrometry is applied across food safety, environmental testing, and drug development.
After Micromass was acquired by Waters, I transitioned into sales and earned an MBA to deepen my understanding of business strategy and marketing. In 2011, I joined SCIEX, where I spent 13 years advancing through roles in marketing, product management, and innovation leadership. As Senior Director of Innovation, I led product roadmapping, strategic planning, and process improvement efforts, eventually serving as Vice President of the Danaher Business System - focused on continuous improvement and operational excellence.
Throughout my career, I’ve seen how analytical chemistry connects healthcare, research, and applied sciences – and how true value comes from integrating technologies. Whether it’s robotics, detection systems, or custom software, success depends on making them work together seamlessly. That’s why I’m excited to be part of HSE, a company that excels at integration – bringing diverse technologies together to create smart, scalable solutions.
Why did you decide to represent HSE in the U.S.?
Mark: I was introduced to Michael Collasius (HSE CEO) by a former SCIEX colleague. Michael explained about the carve-out and how he had brought together a top-notch systems engineering team.
That immediately interested me, because HSE's expertise fits perfectly at the intersection of analytical instrumentation that I've been focused on. After years in product development within large companies, I've often wished I could just have a small, agile team focused on solving one problem - combining technologies to create something truly valuable. HSE is exactly that.
It also appealed to my entrepreneurial side and the fact that HSE needed stronger representation in the U.S. made the opportunity even better. So, the overlap felt ideal: HSE needed business development in the U.S., and I know the challenges companies face when integrating complex technologies. It’s a perfect match.
What do you think makes you a great fit for this role?
Mark: What I bring to HSE is the ability to connect with exactly the kinds of people we need to reach in larger U.S. companies – business leaders and innovation managers who link R&D with corporate strategy. Those are the roles I’ve been in for the past ten years, so I already know many of the key contacts.
I also understand the challenges they face – especially how they weigh ROI when deciding whether to build something in-house or work with a partner like HSE. That perspective helps make sure we’re talking to the right people at the right time and positioning HSE in the best possible way.
What unique value does HSE offer to the U.S. market?
Mark: What really stands out to me – beyond the team’s strong engineering expertise – is HSE’s business model. HSE focuses on design and development, then hands projects over through technology transfer.
I also love the diversity of HSE’s work – the range of products they’ve developed and the breadth of technological expertise across so many applications. It’s impressive and really sets HSE apart.
