Natalie is a Technician Mechanical Engineering at HSE. She shares in her interview how her mechanical engineering studies are expanding her expertise and how she leads the way with her compass.
What do you do at HSE?
Natalie: I joined HSE as a Technician in July 2023, initially in a full-time role. Committed to deepening my knowledge and expertise, I now spend 20% of my time gaining practical experience at work while pursuing my mechanical engineering studies. As a member of the Mechanical Engineering department, my role involves supporting projects by creating assemblies and prototypes, and occasionally helping with testing.
What’s your background?
Natalie: I successfully completed an apprenticeship as a Technician. Afterward, I spent a year finishing my technical vocational baccalaureate. I then took up a temporary role at a company for several months, where I gained valuable practical experience. Since 2022, I’ve been studying mechanical engineering at OST (Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences).
What's your motivation?
Natalie: My goal is to pursue a career in project management in the medical technology sector. I chose HSE because of its extensive work with a diverse range of clients in medical technology. This provides me with a unique opportunity to gain valuable insights and experience.
Is the role all that you imagined it would be?
Natalie: I am pleasantly surprised by my role at HSE. Unlike my apprenticeship, where I was mainly responsible for smaller tasks, I’m now directly involved in exciting projects. What stands out is the support and trust I’ve received – and also being given responsibility for specific developments.
What do you like about HSE?
Natalie: What I really value at HSE is the strong sense of camaraderie and the positive atmosphere in the company. Employees also socialize together outside of work, which strengthens the team spirit.
HSE is deeply committed to fostering growth and actively promotes further training and personal development. Whenever I work in a new field, I am given plenty of time and support to find my feet and deepen my knowledge. Regular tech platform meetings ensure that we continuously learn. My colleagues take the time to explain things, and I also have the opportunity to explore and learn independently.
What do most people not know about you?
Natalie: Most people don't know that I was in the military and served as a lieutenant in the armored corps. I am also a Scout Group leader.
What trends should we keep an eye on?
Natalie: We are already in an excellent position. Nevertheless, artificial intelligence (AI) is an area that we should keep a close eye on. Advances and applications in AI technology could significantly impact our industry.
