Pascale is a Principal Product Manager at HSE. In her interview, she talks about the broad scope of her work to bring innovative products to market – and why she likes to pedal into adventure.
What do you do at HSE?
Pascale: I‘m a product manager, responsible for product management and marketing activities for the solutions we develop here at HSE and sell through partners or resellers, either as OEM solutions or HSE proprietary products. My role involves performing market research to identify and understand customer needs, defining market requirements, and representing the customer perspective in product development projects. In addition, I am involved in product lifecycle management to ensure our offerings remain competitive and work on marketing activities to promote the products in our target markets.
I joined HSE at the end of January 2025 and, currently, I‘m focused on the launch of our new on-deck solutions, the eviDense UV Photometer and the eviFluor Duo Fluorometer.
What’s your professional background?
Pascale: I hold a Master of Science in mechanical engineering from the ETH in Zurich. My studies focused on biomedical engineering and renewable energies. I spent the last 6 months of my degree working on a project at the Federal University of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil, which was in collaboration with the ETH in Zurich.
Earlier in my career, I was a Project Manager and led interdisciplinary projects for the development of new products. For around eight years, I was responsible for running a strategic product group for four categories of analytical lab instruments for a global manufacturer of measurement and precision lab instruments.
Are specific skills important for your work here?
Pascale: Probably the most important skill in product management is the ability to dive into a wide range of topics. Every task is different, from analyzing data to planning go-to-market strategies. Analytical and problem-solving skills are essential to understand user needs and interpret data, while marketing skills are important for promoting our products and ensuring they reach the right audience.
Overall, I guess it’s a combination of technical understanding, analytical skills and marketing expertise that are most important in this role.
What do you value most in a team?
Pascale: For me personally, what I value most is when the team is motivated and works well together to reach a common goal. This involves helping each other out and bringing in different expertise and perspectives.
And last but not least, good teamwork also means enjoying simple things like sharing a laugh together.
Can you tell us about a project or achievement at HSE you’re especially proud of?
Pascale: This is easy to answer as it's the launch of the eviDense UV Photometer and eviFluor Duo Fluorometer, which are on-deck modules that can be integrated into automated liquid handlers. This is actually what my role at HSE was initially created for. The team did an excellent job in developing the instruments, and I’m happy we can bring them to the market now.
What opportunities for learning and developing are you currently pursuing to enhance your skills?
Pascale: I do this in a number of ways. It’s important for me to gain an in-depth understanding of our target customers and their applications, so I research these. I visit customers and talk with our partners and resellers to better understand their applications, needs, and pain points so we can develop innovative products that address these.
What do you like about HSE?
Pascale: I really like the open and motivated atmosphere here and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams across multiple functions. I enjoy the broad scope of my role and switching between very different types of tasks. One moment I’m doing something technical or analyzing data and the next I’m writing website content or conducting market research.
What do most people not know about you?
Pascale: My passions are cycling, traveling, and learning languages. My dream is still to combine these and ride my bicycle from home to Shanghai someday.
