We Have Achieved Official SBTi Validation for Our Climate Targets

Written by Anne-Justine Lefebvre | 25/09/2025

We are proud to announce that HSE•AG has received official validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets. This international recognition confirms that our climate strategy is aligned with a 1.5°C pathway, the highest level of ambition offered by the SBTi.

The SBTi published HSE‘s approved targets on the SBTi Target Dashboard on 25 September 2025.

Clear and ambitious targets

According to our approval letter:

Our company commits to maintain zero scope 1 and scope 2 emissions through 2029, and to measure and reduce its scope 3 emissions from a 2023 base year.

Our targets were validated under the SBTi SME pathway, which provides dedicated guidance for small and medium-sized enterprises. This framework ensures that our commitments meet globally recognized standards while being adapted to the scale and context of our business.

CO₂ results – baseline year 2023

Our emissions inventory, conducted in accordance with the GHG Protocol and SME guidance from SBTi, establishes 2023 as our base year. The results highlight the following:

  • Scope 1 (direct emissions): 0 tCO₂e
HSE operates without combustion-based vehicles or heating systems.
  • Scope 2 (purchased energy): 0 tCO₂e (market-based method)
In 2023, HSE consumed 78,023 kWh of electricity, sourced entirely from EKZ Mixtrom, a certified 100% renewable energy provider. For transparency, the location-based calculation represents 1.8 tCO₂e.
  • Scope 3 (other indirect emissions): 77.1 tCO₂e
    • Business travel: 53.7 tCO₂e
    • Employee commuting: 21.6 tCO₂e
    • Waste: 1.8 tCO₂e

As a result, HSE’s footprint lies within scope 3, representing our key area for reduction in the coming years.

A pathway aligned with our values

Since 2020, HSE has taken proactive steps to support climate action, notably through our partnership with Tree-Nation. This has enabled us to plant over 800 trees, which is equivalent to around 72 tons of CO₂ sequestered over their lifetime.

The SBTi approval marks an important milestone: it validates not only our past efforts but also our roadmap toward a low-carbon future.
