We successfully developed a workflow demonstrator for a revolutionary Molecular Cartography instrument to provide a realistic user experience for demonstration purposes.
We were tasked with designing and building a workflow demonstrator to showcase at one of the industry's most prestigious trade fairs, with a project timeline of 4 months from idea to shipping.
The instrument mockup simulates the workflow for gene expression analysis within the spatial and morphological context of a tissue sample – at single-cell resolution. For an enhanced user experience, the specifications included a simulation of a fully automated workflow, user-friendly interface, and customizable sample and reagent concept.
Realistic user experience
We developed a workflow demonstrator with drawers for sample, reagent, and waste handling.
Up to 6 samples are loaded into the sample drawer in sample slide frames according to a poka-yoke principle.
The reagent drawer holds up to 8 reagent containers and waste is collected in a container in the waste drawer.
The workflow demonstrator is operated using a high-resolution touchscreen. The graphical user interface (GUI) guides users through each workflow step – including consumable loading – using a wizard, which provides a realistic user experience.
Stunning minimalist design
The workflow demonstrator has a unique, eye-catching design with an LED light matrix inspired by Molecular Cartography images. The sleek, glossy front rounds off the visually appealing workflow demonstrator that garnered the desired WOW effect at the trade fair.
Successful Trade Fair Presentation
The demonstrator was successfully showcased at a prestigious trade fair, where visitors had the opportunity to test its usability and explore its features.
We were able to collect valuable feedback from visitors based on hands-on user interaction, highlighting its user-friendliness and innovative design. The workflow demonstrator opens up the possibility to consider human factor engineering at a very early stage of development.
This feedback was instrumental in refining the demonstrator and paved the way for advancing the project to its next development level.
